Sekai no Owari

Ch 11

Expecting to find the lab unoccupied April entered, placing her hair in a ponytail as she walked. Suddenly, she stopped, seeing Donnie sitting there with a horrified expression on his face and staring at the monitor with those things scratching and clawing at the lair door.

Holding in her sigh, she finished her hair, then walked up quietly and leaned against the station, studying him sympathetically. She wasn't disappointed that he snuck down to the lab, more so sad he had to see the truth like this. April had wanted to give him more time before proving what she and Mikey told him earlier, that the world… had changed for the worse.

"What are you doing up, Donatello? I thought you were sleeping?"

Donnie clenched his hands tightly, his knuckles paling as the blood rushed from them. Eventually, he tore his eyes away from the monitor to look up at April, wordlessly imploring her for something, anything, to explain this rationally.

Letting out a sigh, she'd figured this was coming, "It started maybe seven or so months ago. It was far more recently that it turned to this," she said, pointing to the screen. Knowing that Donnie wouldn't see that as a good enough explanation, she nodded and continued, "As far any of us could tell, it began when a new, unknown drug hit the streets. At first, it was an annoyance, causing violence to break out when people taking it just lost it. No one knew the truth behind what the real effects were, though. You see, when someone took too much of that drug they became high as a kite before suddenly getting sick and well... dying. Most people just figured, 'Oh well, what do you expect when you overdose,' but as it turned out, dying wasn't the worst part. Somehow, the drug affected the brain like a virus. It switched on all primal instincts, controlling the body's motor functions without the normal functions such as the heart and organs and that is why they rot."

Giving Donnie a moment to think, she took a breath, "When this was going on everyone, even us, thought it was just a side effect of the drug. No one realised the people that were going crazy were actually dead and hungering for fresh flesh. I mean, how could we? They moved like a normal person, responded like a normal person, only rabid. The ones out there that are slow are only slow because they are older. The longer they are like this, the more they decay and slower they become. The newer ones, which we call fresh or runners, they are fast and strong because they only recently turned."

"People are still taking such a drug?" Donnie asked hollowly. " Even knowing what's really happening?"

Shaking her head and wincing, she told him the part had been proven to be truth rather than mere movie night fiction. "No, after a while it wasn't the drug causing the outbreak anymore… It was the zombies themselves. One bite infects the victim even if they survive the ordeal, making them grow sick and well... they die too. Normally within twenty-four hours or less, reanimating them to start the cycle again. That is how it got so out of hand. Before anybody could counter this, it was far too late."

"So..." Donnie swallowed nervously, looking plaintively up at her, "if I had managed to open that door earlier today, we'd all be one of them by now or in the process of becoming like them?" he asked, horrified by what he'd almost done; horrified by the fact he'd refused to listen to Leo just because he was now a little kid.

"I'm not sure..." April admitted reluctantly.

Donnie turned away to look back at the monitor, staring into it with utter horror. "If there are that many down here, what's it like on the surface?" he eventually asked.

"Far worse. There are hordes all over the place. It's the reason why we don't travel at night anymore. They might be brainless but they are quiet enough that it can be easy to miss them and in numbers, it can be deadly."

Donnie nodded numbly. "Are we safe here?"

"Of course," April assured him with a soft smile. "You rigged this place up after all, well, the older you. The place is like a bunker now. The door should easily be able to withstand tank fire and ramming but if that ever happened, there is an emergency exit. One which I have to admit sucks though, because holding one's breath that long is…" she trailed off as she shivered, recalling how she almost drowned... "On top of that, this lockdown makes it otherwise impossible to get inside or out. There are other features too but there's no point me explaining them all."

"Because I'm only twelve and can't possibly understand?" Donnie asked in a voice so soft he almost couldn't be heard.

Laughing gently, April smiled warmly at him, "No, more like because I would be here all night explaining them all and man, you really outdid yourself on this lair, Donnie. Besides, I kind of drifted off on half of it." She leant forward conspiratorially, "I blame Mikey for distracting me so much that day when I swear I was trying to pay attention; he's a menace." She chuckled again. "Anyway, I think you're better off by reading the monstrous guide that you whipped up to see what other features the lair's security system has but be warned, the truth is it is long and... stale."

Tearing himself away from the horror show on the monitor again, Donnie stared up at her with huge, doe eyes, trying to work out if she was serious or merely taking the mickey. Eventually, he nodded; the sooner he relearnt, the better. "Okay. Where is it?"

Grinning more, she walked off, soon after coming back with a book with the words 'Lair User Manual' on the spine. It was oversized and remarkably so thick that you'd more likely believe it to be a sitcom prompt to mock a person or topic. Letting the thick overweight book drop on the station counter with a dull thud, she watched, waiting for his expression.

Donnie swallowed, peering at the huge book; this wouldn't be as fast as he thought. Sighing, he reached out for the book and slowly dragged it closer. Then he turned the cover, surprised at the chunk of pages that came with it. "What the...?" Suddenly he realised there were no words inside and instead, there was a hole cut out of the middle with something small stuffed inside. Tentatively, he reached over and pulled it out. "What's this?" Donnie asked of April, turning over the small purple device in his hands curiously.

Blinking at him at first, she wasn't sure why he was confused, then she remembered his current age and applicable memories. Biting her lip, she answered him, "It's called a thumb or USB drive or stick. It a mini hard drive that is portable and accepted by all computers that have a USB port. That one can hold up to thirty-two gigs and to save room on your computers, you transferred the lair schematics, system information, including lockdown protocols, passcodes and so on, onto it. In an effort to keep grabby hands like Mikey's from mauling it or losing it, you thought it best to hide it in that book as it would discourage him from bothering to look inside and therefore losing it."

"Oh. That makes sense. Mikey always did like to play with things he shouldn't. So I guess he hasn't changed much, then?"

"Change? Mikey?" she laughed harder. "Now that would be impossible and just wrong on every level."

"Everything changes," Donnie replied solemnly, looking over the computer for where to plug in the flash drive, "just some things change more than others and... in unexpected ways."

"That's true, but some things, even though they seemed to have changed, deep down they didn't, they just took on another form." April reached out and took his hand, guiding it to the port.

The moment she did, Donnie tensed but forcing himself to remember she was a friend, he let her guide him to the USB port. As she let him go and he plugged in the drive, he smothered a yawn.

Leaning back she studied the lab, knowing she would have to clean it sooner rather than later; she couldn't risk Leo or Raph coming in here and getting hurt. Not that she would allow them to be in here period due to the dangers it holds even when cleaned up.

"You really should get some sleep, Donnie. Those files will take you some time to go through and being exhausted, you will not retain as much as you would like to," April pointed out, trying her damndest to hold in her own yawns.

For a moment Donnie wanted to protest but then, seeing the sense in her words, nodded. Wordlessly, he stood and walked out, taking the flash drive with him as April watched him leave.

Letting out a tired sigh, April then sat in the chair to take a look at the footage. As she suspected, the pack that were following them in the sewers had reached the entrance, somehow aware of its presence. April shivered. How could they know? There'd been moments a few wandering freaks appeared to acknowledge the hidden door in the past but that was mere coincidence. That or someone had been too loud after riling someone else up or being riled up themselves.

Shaking her head, she flipped to the camera where the hidden hatch was to see if everything was okay with Mikey.

There was nothing dramatic or threatening going on so she watched him seal the hatch and walk away. A yawn escaped her so she reluctantly stood up once again, examined the room and then her hand. Clenching it, she fought to contain the feelings that had been growing and worrying her over the last-half day… The ones where she felt she'd lost her best friend and the feeling where despite all the years she'd known the guys, considering them like family, she didn't feel like she belonged anymore. Rather she was just the strange human they felt had no connection to them…

-:-

The darkness loomed around him and his tiny hands crawled silently towards his new big prey. Before today, he would've never dared to treat his little brother like this but even if he didn't understand why, his brother wasn't the little one anymore and he was still amusing to play with.

Though he felt off and his mind wondered if this was all a dream since there was no way a giant turtle somehow magically entered his room, he knew this was real, this was the truth. How he knew, he wasn't sure but that didn't matter at the moment.

For so long he has wanted to do this. For so long he has wanted to try this and get even after so many times of his little brat brother doing it to him but he couldn't before because his father always expected him to be the responsible one! A mischievous smirk alighting his face, he slunk up to his now bigger brother's side, seeing his chest falling and rising as light snores escaped his lips. Wiggling his tail joyfully in anticipation, Leonardo narrowed his eyes. Then he lunged into the air, pouncing down hard onto the unsuspecting turtle with a battle cry of "WAKE UP! IT'S CHRISTMAS!"

Mikey gasped in shock and fright as his breath was forced from his body. Shooting suddenly upright, he accidentally knocked a giggling Leonardo back on his shell as he looked about frantically for whatever attacked him.

"Leo?" he gasped moments later, spying Leo laying back on his legs, tail facing him. "What the shell?"

"It's morning time," Leo grinned sheepishly. "I'm hungry, Mikey."

"Ugh... I feel like I barely slept. What time is it anyway?" Mikey groaned, rubbing the gritty sleep from his eyes.

"Six, four, three, TWO, ONE BLAST OFF!"

"What?" Mikey asked distantly, turning to look over at the clock on Leo's desk. "Wait, six forty-three? I've only been asleep like four hours!" he protested with a pathetic whine, flopping backwards into Leo's mattress again.

Huffing, Leo growled, flinging himself onto Mikey, "So? I'm hungry!" he grumbled, puckering his cheeks out.

Sitting on his bigger brother's plastron, Leo smacked it repeatedly like a drum to wake up the lazy turtle.

"Alright, alright, I'm getting up... get off me already and go bother someone else..." Mikey grumbled without thinking, pushing Leo gently off so he could get out of bed.

"Okay!" Leo agreed happily, rushing from the room.

"Last time I agree to stay the night with you..." Mikey muttered crankily; it had been a bad and sleepless couple of days. When reading to Leo last night, Leo had begged him not to leave him alone through the night so, like the sucker he was, Mikey had agreed to come back and sleep in his brother's room. Blearily mumbling half-coherent obscenities, he pulled himself to his feet and limped out the room towards the kitchen.

-:-

Sneaking into the quiet room, Leo set his sights on his next victim; it was time for some payback on him as well. Slowly, he approached Donnie, hearing him mutter nonsense in his sleeping state, his shell facing up as he laid on his plastron. It gave Leo a brilliant idea, as he climbed on the headboard. Once hovering over his prey, Leo moistened his lips, collecting all the spit he could muster before letting nature take its course, watching and anticipating as the drool slowly ran down, pooling onto Donnie's head and running down the back of his neck.

Donnie's face twitched in a faint look of disgust as his hand sleepily snaked up and wiped at the offending puddle on his head and neck. Then he shifted, turning to face the other direction and fell back into a deep sleep.

Dismayed and slightly vexed at the lack of fun reaction, Leo blinked down at Donnie. Tapping his foot lightly, he thought more about it. What else could he do? Sighing as his brain went blank - Mikey was the more creative brother - he simply decided to go with an old trick; he wanted to do something more exciting but who could deny the classics? Positioning himself to face the wall, he jumped backwards, landing onto Donnie's shell and screaming at the top of his lungs, "Giddy up, turtle boy!"

Spluttering in fright as he was shocked out of sleep, Donnie pushed himself up on his hands and knees and bucked, "Get OFF of me, Mikey! Geez! You're too old for this already!" he yelled furiously. Why couldn't Mikey just grow up already?

"I'm not Mikey," Leonardo huffed petulantly, insulted as he clung desperately to the back rim of Donnie's shell to stay on.

Freezing in sudden realisation, Donnie remembered what had happened and turned to stare wide-eyed at Leo gripping onto him like a limpet.

Leo, grinning ear to proverbial ear, chuckled; now that was what he was looking for.

Really wishing yesterday had been merely the nightmare it felt like, Donnie sighed and allowed himself to flop flat onto his plastron again, face in pillow. That's when he recoiled in disgust over just how wet his pillow was and that was when he was reminded yet again of how bratty Leo could be when he was little. In fact, Leo'd been the one to inspire some of Mikey's shenanigans but where one had grown out of it, the other hadn't. "Get off of me and get out of my room," he spat angrily.

"Are you going to get up?" Leo bounced back and forth, refusing to remove himself from Donnie's shell.

"If I say yes, will you go away?" Donnie grit out, trying to keep his head clear of the disgusting wet patch he knew was not his own.

"Maybe," Leo drew out. "Will you play with me?"

"No, I have work to do," Donnie said shortly. "I need to try to find out how this happened to us."

Growing silent, Leonardo whimpered, slowly climbing off of Donatello's shell, "But that will not bring him back..." Leo then left the room before his brother could comment.

Donnie gazed sorrowfully after his suddenly little brother as, now awake, he pushed himself up. "But at least we'd remember our time with him..."

-:-

Mikey pulled out the freshly baked loaf of bread from the oven, reflecting on the fact he only had enough flour and yeast to bake three, maybe four more loaves, and placed it on the rack. Leaving it to cool, he pulled the out of date powdered milk from the cupboard and mixed enough up for breakfast, pulling a face. Once upon a time, he'd have been grateful for whatever they could find but the last few years had spoiled him and he'd learnt the taste of fresh food. On the bright side, he figured, at least Leo and Donnie would still be used eating anything they could find. Then he remembered reading on the back, 'Not suitable as a complete milk food for children under the age of two years'. As he went to put the remains of the packet away, he heard April walk in with a grizzling Raph and looked at her curiously.

"Is there something on my face?" April raised an eyebrow at him before taking a seat and letting Raph play with two spoons. Smacking them together, he amused himself and she allowed a small smile to grace her face before turning her attention fully on Mikey.

"Nope!" Mikey replied, steeling himself to ask her something, yet hesitating. Then thinking better of it and knowing she would likely kill him if he said it, he turned around to start cutting the loaf into slices to toast.

"Mikey?" April tilted her head at him. "What's wrong? And don't say nope or nothing because you've never been one to hide when you're thinking of something... When you actually think, that is."

"Wow, ouch," he chuckled, turning around, knife in hand to ward off danger; he had no choice but to come out and ask now he'd been confronted thus. "Okay then. So, you know how the powdered milk says not for little kids and how babies are supposed to drink milk?"

Donnie looked up sharply.

"Well, isn't the best baby milk supposed to come from... you know... breasts? So couldn't you like, just breastfeed little Raphie?"

Donnie hung his head. "Mikey..." he sighed.

"What? It's a valid question!" Mikey protested before turning back to a stunned April. "If it makes you more comfortable, I could leave the room while you do it," Mikey offered.

April's jaw dropped and she blinked at him before flashing a look at Raph and then back to Mikey. He couldn't actually be serious, right?... she thought, trying to get over the shock of the question and have her voice not come out quite so horrified, "Mikey! I would need to have been pregnant first to even produce the hormones for it! Where and when was I ever pregnant!" she exploded. "Besides, sure there is a way to do so without being pregnant first but like shell I would ever even consider taking such supplements to mimic the hormones," she ranted in a high pitch voice in panic, failing to hide the terror she was feeling over even thinking of doing that or breastfeeding her friend and brother. It was just so wrong on many levels and she couldn't believe even Mikey would ask such a thing in his most mischievous mood!

Donnie sighed again and looked directly at Mikey, catching his eye. "We're turtles, Mikey."

"Really, Donnie? What gave it away? The shell?" Mikey asked, deliberately turning to try and look back at his own shell.

"Milk isn't even good for turtles!" Donnie said sharply. "The only reason we can drink it is because of our mutation but don't you remember how it used to make us ill when we were younger? We were only able to start consuming it regularly when we were a little older than Leo is now!"

"Ah, shell! I totally forgot about that," Mikey paled in dismay. He looked at the mixture in front of him, frowning. They didn't really have much else but... "So I shouldn't give it to Leo now?"

"Small doses only! Unless you want him sick!" Donnie bit out. "Although, after this morning, it would probably serve him right," he added darkly as Leo looked at him innocently.

"What? I didn't do anything! Honest!" Leo batted his eyes and leaned towards April. "Really I didn't. They are just being mean to me to get me in trouble."

Mikey scoffed loudly as Donnie said, "Right, of course, we are."

Staying out of it, April directed her attention to Donnie, "Then, if that is true, about the milk I mean, what are we going to feed Raph? He needs the right nutrition."

Musing on the thought, Donnie suggested, "The best thing would probably be a liquefied worms and algae mix."

"That's totally gross!" Mikey interjected loudly, making a disgusted face.

Donnie ignored him and continued, gazing at the sickly looking April. "At least until he can start eating solids properly. Then when we switch him slowly to human foods like we grew up on, it'll have to be easy to digest foods for a while."

April's face twisted at the thought as she glanced at Mikey, "I'm leaning towards the turtle pellets we brought back as a joke..."

Mikey brightened at the idea. "Do you think that would that work, Donnie? You know, if we mashed them up and liquefied them?"

"Turtle pellets?" Donnie asked flatly.

"Yeah!" Mikey, with April's help, quickly explained about them.

"Do you have the container? So I can look at the ingredients?" Donnie asked, looking from one to the other.

"Yeah give me a sec," April stood up with Raph, then passed him off to Mikey.

"Uh... why are you giving him to me, Ape? I don't know how to hold him! What if he wets himself! That's a really thin shirt he has on!" Mikey protested anxiously, holding Raph at a distance.

"Mikey, stop complaining and just hold your brother. You're going to upset him if you continue acting like that," April pointed out, leaving the room. Not a second out the door, Raph's lip trembled as he tried to see where she had gone.

"But! April!" Mikey called frantically as Raph took in a deep breath and wailed. "What do I do? What do I do?"

"Hold him close and cradle his head," Donnie piped up helpfully. "Then rock gently or bounce lightly up and down and talk to him."

Mikey tried as his brother suggested but to no avail. Raph's cries only became louder, so Mikey began bouncing faster in desperation.

Raph, crying harder, suddenly made odd sounds as the well-known 'The Exorcist' scene came to life and everything that he ate the previous night, all partially-digested, splashed all over a thoroughly disgusted Mikey.

"EWWW!" Mikey cried as April came running back in.

Holding the container of turtle feed in her hand, April burst out in laughter, "Mikey, that's such a good look for you."

He shot April a betrayed look as he thrust Raph back at her. "Yeah, yeah, laugh it up," he grumbled. "Now I gotta go wash before I can finish making breakfast."

With Raph crying more, April rolled her eyes and placed the container in front of Donnie before grabbing an extra shirt she had in her back pocket and using some water in a cup to clean Raph up with. As she cleaned the little turtle in her arms, she talked to him softly, gently wiping his face and mouth, "That's a good boy. You see? You got your revenge at last."

"Traitor," Mikey grumbled, racing off as Donnie and Leo laughed. "Bad enough I stepped in his mess yesterday when I couldn't even see straight thanks to that concussion..."

Snickering, April shook her head before pulling Raph close against her chest. She could see he wasn't feeling good, "So I take it what I fed him yesterday wasn't the best idea, then?" She consoled the poor child who found comfort by her actions.

Donnie shook his head, sobering, "Not really, though it's not like there was really anything else." He pulled the container closer as he read and examined the ingredients list.

"I'm hungry!" Leo suddenly interrupted, pouting as he did.

Donnie canted his head at Leo, suddenly remembering how he woke him up that morning. "How hungry are you, Leo, because we have to wait for Mikey."

"Really, really hungry!" Leo whimpered, looking around to see if he could sneak something.

"Well sorry, Leo but you have to wait until Mikey is back," April added gently, rubbing Raph's head as he cooed and sniffled in her arms.

Smiling, Donnie unscrewed the lid on the container, breaking the seal. He pulled out a small handful of pellets and handed them over to Leo. "Here, try these."

Poking the odd things, Leo's nostrils ruffled in disgust, "What are they? Dog food?"

"They're Turtle Snacks, kinda like really tiny cookies," Donnie explained innocently.

Leo leant towards them, sniffing them as his face twisted in uncertainty, "Are you sure, Donnie? They look like dried poop." Hearing that comment, April fought to contain her laughter.

Donnie nodded adamantly, turning the container so the label faced Leo, showing the bright picture of a natural turtle eating the pellets. "See? It says 'Turtle Pellets'."

Biting his lip, Leo picked one up by the tips of his finger and popped it in his mouth. As it touched his tongue, his eyes widened in horror and he started to gag and spit the pellet onto the table. Scratching his tongue frantically with his hands, Leo flashed a nasty look at Donnie, "They are poop!" April burst into laughter, unable to watch anymore as she tried her hardest to ask Donnie if they would work for Raph.

At that moment, Mikey reentered the kitchen, drying himself off with a towel. He looked askance at the scene at the table and, in case they were still laughing over him, decided not to ask. Instead, he went straight to the bench, dropping the towel nearby and finished cutting the bread. Then he dropped four slices into the toaster.

Finally calming down, Donnie looked over at April, "Nutritionally speaking, they should be passable for Raphie. However, being that we have human DNA as well, I'm not sure if it'll be enough. Also, based on Leo's reaction, I can't say how easy it will be to get Raph to actually eat it."

"I was afraid you would say that," April admitted. "Then what can we use to mix with it? I know you said about the disgusting smoothie but I get the feeling that too wouldn't work fully for two reasons. One, if needs to be a particular type of algae, the possibility for us to farm it will be almost impossible, two... with so many undead and decaying out there, the soil is likely to be spoilt and the worms could be more of a threat to him then anything. I'm not suggesting the possibility he could be infected by the virus but rather that it could make him violently sick," April pointed out.

"Why do you think he wouldn't be infected?" Donnie asked thoughtfully, gazing intensely into April's green eyes.

Shaking her head, April explained, "We can't get infected, technically."

"Really? I thought you said people were getting infected from those things out there," Donnie said, refusing to use the word 'zombie'. "So why can't we? And since I assume this also means you by the way you said that, it can't be simply because we are mutant turtles because you, definitely are not."

Mikey shot Donnie a sharp look as he placed two dry slices of toast on two plates, sliding them over to Leo and Donnie.

Sighing, April ignored that comment and instead refreshed Donnie's memory, "As we discussed yesterday, you created a vaccine that wasn't fully tested, choosing to inject us all over the growing fear of being bitten and well Mikey almost had been. So yes, it has nothing to do with..." Suddenly, April fell silent.

Donnie frowned, thinking back to that heated discussion where he'd all but accused April of lying to them about being their friend. "Had nothing to do with what?" he pressed eventually.

Mikey stopped what he was doing and gazed at April expectantly.

"Huh?" April snapped out of her fugue. "Nothing, it just hasn't been fully tested that's all..." April reiterated. "We shouldn't dare risk getting bitten in any case, regardless of it is fool-proof or not, as the immunity doesn't shield us from the bacteria or those walking corpses."

Donnie nodded while Mikey kept staring at April, knowing there was something she was hiding. When she averted her gaze, Mikey turned away back to the toaster. "I thought we agreed, no more secrets between us," he muttered, tossing more bread into the device.

Picking at his dry toast, Donnie asked, "And I suppose all my notes on the vaccine are gone with the computer?"

April suddenly shifted her feet, putting all her attention toward Raph and not answering. She couldn't or she would have to lie.

"What's even to say it's still effective within Leo, Raph and myself, after what happened..." Donnie sighed, pulling apart the dry toast. "Without those notes... I can't even try to work it out and... I wouldn't still have the expertise anyway..."

Mikey paled at the disturbing thought. "Didn't Donnie have some sort of print out he gave you or something, April?"

Biting her lip, April wasn't sure what to say as her palms suddenly felt sweaty and her stomach started to turn.

"April?" Mikey prompted again, worried over the fact she wasn't answering.

"I should give Raph a proper wash and change his diaper," she said, getting up quickly to avoid the question altogether.

"April, Donnie has a point. What if it doesn't work on them anymore now that their ageing reverted?" Mikey pleaded as April turned her back, beginning to walk from the kitchen. "Sooner or later, it's going to be an issue and we can't afford to take that risk."

Pausing at the door she took a deep breath not wanting to look at either of them directly, "The files are hidden in a secret compartment in the lab, in the far back were the broken lamp is. On the wall where there is a brick a little darker than the rest, press it and it will pop out. Then turn it counter-clockwise three times, then clockwise two. The compartment will open and the files are there… but they are the real files, not the fakes we had on the computers…" April shivered suddenly. "Donnie, you begged me not to tell anyone, you were too ashamed… Why I don't know… All I can say I trusted you when you told me the truth, when... well I knew since I was helping you with the immunity drug that…" April shivered more, desperate not to drop Raph, "When you read them, remember that I trusted you at the time and that has never changed, even if you couldn't force yourself to tell me what was done…"

"What do you mean, what was done?"

Swallowing hard, April shook her head, "I don't know what was done to make it work… We…. We lied about not having the ingredients to make more for the survivors out there, since the reality is," April paused, looking back at Mikey shamefully and trying not to cry, "It doesn't work on humans and never did."
