Author's note: this is directly taken from the episode. So, everything in bold belong to Martin Baynton's team, but any mistake is my fault!

One small change I did was changing the weekday from Tuesday to Saturday. I don't think the castle would be open during the week in April or that knight's camp would require teenagers to miss school.

Also, in my story, Jester started to work officially at the castle in September, but his family had entertained the Kippernook for many years, so he's been around before. Including for April's fool day.

Furthermore, I think a modern attraction, even of an old castle, would have bathrooms. Especially if employees and campers are expected to stay on site. So, no bucket of cold water for Jester this time! But this doesn't mean the showers are working well!

Smithy also said in the original he never learned his letters. Of course, now in our days, he would at least know his alphabet. So, I changed that for Roman numbers, which makes sense in the context anyway.

Finally, I have no idea what the chant really was, so this is my approximation.

History lesson was one of Jane's favourite knight's camp activities. As much fun as practice was, learning about the best tactical techniques never failed to motivate her. Especially with her mentor's enthusiastic storytelling.

? The knights were heavily outnumbered, ? said Sir Theodore. ? Hence so employed a cunning deception. ?

? They built a mock fortress? ? said Jane. ? With straw guards? ?

? Quite so. And when the enemy realized it was but a ruse, it was too late! The knights swept out from the surrounding hills and… ?

? Knock them down like a side through bailey, ? she interrupted.

? Hum hum! ? smiled Sir Theodore. ? Some of the greatest victories are born of deception. ?

? But are they true victories, Sir Theodore, or are they stuff of ballads? ?

? Perhaps a little of both, Jane. Just remember! ? he said, lowering himself to Jane's level. ? Fool the mind and the battle is yours! ?

? Fool the mind, ? she repeated. ? It is funny you should say that, sir. For do you know what day it is? ?

? Indeed, I do! ? said Sir Theodore, redressing himself. ? It is Saturday! ?

That left Jane wondering if her professor was playing her, as she watched him walk to the window.

? And the royal family is celebrating with a picnic, ? he added. ? And without Jester. Very wise choice considering last year falling. ?

? Jester loves All Fools Day, Sir. It is his favourite day of the year. ?

Sir Theodore saluted Sir Ivon who was on guard duty. As he tried to respond, Ivon dropped the basket he was carrying.

? Mine too, Jane, ? he said with a small laughter. ? Yes, indeed. ?

At the forge, Pig was walking in its giant wheel. The pumps were pumping. The fire was firing. And Smithy was getting ready to forge. As Jane walked in, everything looked as usual.

? Well done, Pig, ? he complimented his ally.

? Smithy? ? said Jane. ? Have Jester jested you already? ?

? Not yet. You? ?

? No. I wish he would get it over with! Waiting is almost worse than the prank. ?

Pounding this, Smithy reached for his hammer, only to find it glue to the anvil.

? Jester! ? he mumbled. ? Playing with my tool! This is not funny! ?

? Not up to his usual standard… ? she added. ? But, maybe, that is just what he wants us to think! ?

Jane took her investigation to kitchens where Pepper was making tarts.

? No! ? answered Pepper. ? No sign of his funny acts all morning! Or his tricks! ?

? He always catches me out. Well, not this year, Pepper! I shall be on my guard all day! ?

? Maybe Jester will drop his silly pranks for one year. ?

? Maybe. Or maybe he is plotting something really big! ?

Pepper tried to lift her cauldron from the floor.

? What in the name of all nonsense have we got here? ? she complained before opening it up. ? Rocks? How sad is that for a prank? ?

? Too sad and much too small. Fool the mind and the battle is yours, Pepper! ? declared Jane. ? This is just a decoy to off our guards. ?

? Jester will still catch something all right once I catch hold of him! ?

8

Jane was crossing the yard when she heard a cry for help, somewhere over her head.

? Hello! ?

? Rake? ?

? Up here! You look very small! ? he shouted back from the top of a tower.

? What are you doing up there? ?

? This is where I woke up. I have no idea how I got up here! ?

? I do! Do you know what day it is? ?

? No! Oh, oh, yes! ?

? Exactly! And the game is still afoot, so keep your eyes open for Jester! ?

? I will, Jane! I can see everything from up here! ?

Jane continued to walk to her last friend's room.

? Right, my funny hated fool! Time to see was you… ?

Before she could finish, Jester bashed through the door, scratching frenetically.

? Oh, ha, ha, Jester, ? she sarcastically said. ? Very funny! ?

? Itching powder! That is low! Who did it? Come on! ?

? Let me guest! Nobody? All part of a bigger deception, is it? The big hoax? ?

? Yes, Jester, ? added Smithy. ? Like fusing my hammer to the anvil! ?

? What? Are you crazy? ? replied Jester, still scratching. ? How could I do that? ?

? How? Easy! You would … well… You would need… ? said Smithy.

? Smithy? ? said Jane.

? No one could make a fire high enough to do that, ? said Smithy.

They turned around as they heard Dragon laughing on the battlement.

? All Fools Day! ? he screamed.

? You? ? said an angry Jane. ? It was you? ?

? Your faces! ? said Dragon, rolling on the floor laughing. ? Was I brilliant or was I completely brilliant? ?

? Come on, Jester, ? called Smithy. ? Come and wash that power off. ?

? Jane! Jane! ? screamed Rake. ? I spotted him! Jester is in the yard with Smithy! ?

? Thank you, Rake! Good work! ? said Jane.

? So, can I come down now? ? asked Rake.

? Yes, Rake! ? said Jane, before returning her attention to her lizard friend. ? And you put poor Rake up there last night, didn't you? ?

? Oh, yes! I fooled them all! ? said Dragon, still laughing his heart out.

? Those were now All Fools Day jests! ? schooled Jane. ? They were just pranks! ?

? Oh, jealous! ? replied Dragon.

? I am not! ? said Jane.

? Jealous! ? said Dragon, which made Jane leave. ? All right cut the huffy! What makes a proper jest? Come on! Teach me, Jane! Come on! ?

Jane went straight to the bathrooms without answering. Only Sir Theodore, from his balcony, seems to find the scene amusing.

? Cold! Too cold! I shall freeze to death! ? she heard Jester say from the shower.

? Better than itching to death! ? replied Smithy, from outside the shower booth.

? Jester? ? said Jane, opening the door a little.

? No! Stay out there! ? he replied. ? I am in my frozen under leggings! ?

It was bad enough there was no hot water left without having his crush seeing him in this predicament…

? Trust me, I have no desire to see that, ? said Jane.

? Very wise! ? said Smithy.

? Hey! ? replied Jester.

? I just want to know if we can relax now or are you still planning an All Fools Day jest? ? asked Jane.

? No, a giant green gargoyle has now ruined my mood for jesting, ? said Jester.

? Then we have to get him back! ? said Jane. ? Play a fool on him! ?

? On Dragon? ? said Jester. ? No, no, no! Not even this fool is fool enough to fool a dragon! No way! ?

? Would he laugh us or fry us? ? asked Smithy.

? I think he would laugh, ? answered Jane.

? You think? ? said Smithy.

? No, Smithy, ? mumbled Jane to Smithy's ear. ? What I really think is that our friend in there in a silly hat is still planning to fool us! ?

Smithy flushed a toilet, sending a jet of frozen water in the shower.

? Did he plan that? ? said Smithy.

8

Dragon intercepted Jane as she came out.

? So, are you going to teach me? Or should I start sulking? ?

? All right Dragon! ? said Jane with a laugh. ? I can teach you. ?

? Excellent! I am all ears! And claws and scales and fire… Where? Stop! ?

? Not here! A good All Fools Day hoax need secrecy, planning and more secrecy! ?

? Secrecy! Good! Yes, I can do secrecy! ?

8

Still on the top of the tower, Rake was trying to gather enough courage.

? Come on, Rake, ? he told himself. ? It is just a few steps. Nothing to fear. A set of steps down in the dark belly of the castle… Perhaps my garden can wait a little while longer… There is so much to see from up here! The world is so big! ?

8

As they flew over the castle, Jane gave her first lesson.

? A Fools Day jest must be grand and sculpt. And one must believe the unbelievable. And above all, it must be funny! ?

? Like itching power! ? said Dragon.

? Nothing like itching power! ?

? Whom should we fool? Silly hat? ?

? Too obvious! ?

? Stable boy? Gardener? Which one? ?

? All of them! ?

? A grant jesting! I like it! Yes! Hihi! ?

8

Then in Dragon's cave, they planned the details.

? We need to start small, so no one suspects us, ? said Jane. ? We sprinkle a few clues around. ?

? Like blood! ? said Dragon.

? euh ! No. ?

? Pretend blood! Then we tie a branch to your head like a pretend unicorn and then the great dragon comes and slays the terrible beast. Oh yeah! Brilliant! ?

? Dragon! The trick is to make it believable! Not to make it completely dumb! ?

? Oh! ?

? But nice try. Keep thinking. Perhaps we could use the dragon symbols! ?

? If we did, how would they fool anyone? We understand only a few of them. ?

? Exactly! No one knows what they all mean. So, we can pretend to unlock one of their secrets! ?

? Oh! That is genius! Are you part dragon? ?

? Just this part here. But tell no one, ? joked Jane.

? We could use my world stones. ?

Jane picked three of them.

? Perfect! ?

8

In the meantime, Smithy and Jester went on a different quest. They brought back news to the kitchens.

? Sorry, Pepper. No sign of Rake anywhere, ? said Smithy.

? He could have gone to the market, ? said Jester.

? He could have. Or this could be more of your All Fools Day's foolishness! ? replied Pepper.

? Not guilty! Not this year! ? claimed Jester.

? Right! ? said Jane as she joined her friends. ? Who did it? ?

? Did what, Petal? ? asked Pepper.

? Who drop this in the royal garden? ? answered Jane, showing them the rocks.

? Dragon stone, ? said Smithy.

? Who drop them? ? said Jester. ? Hum, let me think. Who is big, green and is playing foolish pranks all day? ?

? Yes. I thought that. Until I saw his face. These are not from his collection. And the markings are all new. Who was it? ? said Jane, looking at her fool friend. ? You? ?

? Not this jester! Honest! Why is everyone picking on me? ?

? Hum, let me think… ? said Smithy.

Jester shook his head in disbelieve.

? Well, whomever it is, please stop! ? said Jane. ? Dragon seems really depressed about it. ?

An enthusiastic scream resonates through the air as Dragon land on a tower and started jumping up and down. They all rushed outside.

? Jane! Jane! Yeah! Wahoo! ?

? Hum! Very depressed! ? commented Jester.

? Jane! The new stones! I worked them out! ? said Dragon. ? There are a migration coming! Yahoo! ?

? A migration? ? said Jane. ? A migration of what? ?

? Dragons, Jane! ? said Dragon. ? A migration of dragons! ?

He did a somersault in the air and left.

? There are more dragons? ? asked Pepper.

? Oh, come on! ? replied Jester. ? Hello good people! Am I the only one with a brain here? ?

? Who has the stones? ? asked Jane.

They all turned to Smithy who was standing next to the picnic table with the stones.

? If we lined them up and read the signs… ? said Jane. ? We already know this one means dragon. ?

? He scratches it everywhere, ? said Pepper. ? Poor thing! ?

? But this one is new, ? continued Jane. ? V for victory? To remember a great dragon battle? ?

? Come on, Jane, ? said Jester, impatiently. ? You know your Roman number! That sign is the number five. Nothing to do with migration. Your big frog is playing with us! ?

? I never learn Roman numbers, but I know my animals, ? said Smithy. ? This is an arrow. Just like the geese make when they fly together. ?

? When they migrate! ? exclaimed Pepper.

? Sorry, Smithy. This is one fool who is not going to be fool by a dragon. No way! ? said Jester. ? Anyway, the last stone makes no sense at all! What is that about? ?

? Dragon will know, ? said Jane.

? Jane! ? said Jester. ? Is your brain off duty all of a sudden? Of course, Dragon will know! He will make it mean whatever he wants it to mean! Wake up all of you! ?

As he walked away, Jane let out a little smile. Everything was going according to plan.

8

Still on the roof, Rake made a new try.

? Stare at me all you like, master stairwell! You do not scare me! No sir! No set of steps is going to keep this royal gardener from his turnips! ?

He got down a few steps with determination … before climbing back.

? Maybe later! ?

8

Jane met with Dragon in their hiding place.

? Dragon, you were brilliant! ?

? Of course! I am a creature of untold talent and qualities! ?

? Like modesty and humility? ? replied Jane with sarcasm.

? Oh, their faces! They completely believe me! ?

? But not Jester. He still smells a big green rat. ?

? So, plan two! Strap on Mr. Unicorn branch. ?

? No. It is time for some more theatre. I want to see a full-on and tragic dragon. ?

? I can do tragic. ?

? A dragon desperate to set off in search of a migration but compel to stay for his friendship for a fearless short-life warrior. ?

? Now, that really is tragic. ?

A voice called from across the gardens.

? Jane! ? yelled Sir Theodore. ? A word if you will. ?

? Off to my next performance! ? said Dragon, flying off.

Jane caught up with Sir Theodore.

? Jane, ? he said. ? I see very little in the way of castle duties today. ?

? Hmm, I think all the tasks are in hand, Sir Theodore, ? said Jane.

? I am not scolding, Jane, ? kindlysaid her mentor. ? I just need to be kept inform. For you seem to be practising jesting not jousting today, hum? ?

? Sir Theodore! What ever do you mean? ? pretended Jane.

A yell interrupted the conversation.

? Jane! ? yelled Pepper. ? Jane! ?

After Sir Theodore nodded at Jane to go, she runs to the yard where Dragon was making a scene.

? Stay! ? he said, throwing his long neck on the ground in fake despair. ? Go! Stay! Go! Stay! ?

? Dragon! ? said Jane. ? Stop that! ?

? What do you care warrior knight? ? said an overly dramatic Dragon. ? You shall stay here with your duties when I should be free to follow my kind! ?

? Dragon, you can leave! But I must stay! I have a duty to the King! ? declared Jane.

The noise also caught Jester's attention. He got out of his room, carrying rocks.

? Then I have to stay, ? said Dragon with fake tears. ? I will bring the dragons to me! ?

Dragon flew off.

? Poor Dragon! ? said a compassionate Pepper. ? He really wants to go and find the migration. But not without Jane. ?

? Jane, look. About what I said earlier… I thought I could prove it was a hoax, so I went to get these. My juggling stones. They are all dragons' stones too. I thought the markings might… I think they might be stalled, parts of a chart, perhaps a map… Perhaps they do migrate, ? offered Jester.

? Poor Dragon, ? said Jane.

8

Later, Jane and Dragon made points on their progress. Jane was ecstatic.

? Pure All Fools Day's genius! ? she said. ? Even Jester believe it now! ?

? Oh yes! Some beast got it and this beast… Arrrrr! ? said Dragon, scratching his back on a wall.

Jane shocked her head at his attics.

? So, what's next? ? said Dragon.

? A dance. We should all get them to do a silly dance to welcome the dragons! ?

? No! ? said an impressed Dragon. ? Really? They would do that? Are we that good? ?

? Trust me! When we are thought with them, they will be dancing the silliest dance even. And chanting up crazy chant. ?

? Lambs to the slaughter! ? said Dragon, delightful at the idea.

? Now, you know that berry patch halfway up the track? ?

? Green bushes, red berries. No problem. You want me to burn them? ? said Dragon, spiting fire.

? No. I want you to pick them! ?

? Pick them. Right. Yes. Good. Then what? ?

? Then smear the juice all over your body. ?

? Right. Smear the juice … all … over … my … body. ?

? I want you to look red and scary! ? quickly added Jane.

? Oh! I can do scary! ? said Dragon in a low voice.

Jane laughed.

? But not too scary! Now here what we do… First, we need to do… Dragon, stop laughing! Listen! ?

8

Back to Rake on the roof…

? Twelve steps! Much better! ? he tried to encourage himself. ? Twelve whole steps out of … hundreds… ?

8

At the picnic table, Jane was updating her friends on Dragon's quest while Jester was pacing.

? I tell you Jane, he got me worried, ? said Smithy. ? He really has. ?

? He wants to believe there are others in the world. Quite natural, if you ask me, ? said Pepper.

? Quite very scary, if you ask me! ? replied Jester.

? If it gets any worse, I shall just have to go off on a search with him, ? declared Jane.

? And leave us? ? said Pepper.

? There may be no choice, ? said Jane, lowering her head. ? Perhaps the dance will help. ?

? Dance? ? asked Jester. ? What dance? ?

? A dance of welcome to bring the dragons. He wants us all to join in… ? said Jane, standing up from the table. ? But I can do it! No one else needs worry about it! ?

Dragon took his place atop the tower where Rake was still fidgeting.

? I shall be stuck up here forever… ?

Dragon started to make strange noises. Its frightened Rake so much, he rushed down the stairs!

? Help! ?

Down in the yard, Jane's friends were also impressed.

? Keep calm, Jester! ? mumbled the fool. ? Think about nice things! Juggling balls, hat with bells, many-coloured leggings… ?

? Poor thing! ? said Jane. ? He looks so very wrenched. ?

? No! ? said Jester. ? The word you want is scary! Very scary! ?

? So, what do we do? ? asked Smithy. ? Tell us what to do, Jane. ?

? I must do the welcome dance! ? she answered. ? I must help Dragon. ?

? Me too, ? said Smithy. ? If you think it would help. ?

? Yes, please, ? said Jane. ? And the higher the better! Up on the battlement quickly! ?

Much to Sir Theodore's delight, the teenagers rushed over … right after Smithy scolded Jester, who was hiding under the table.

? Are you sure you can do this? ? said Jane.

? Anything for Dragon, ? replied Pepper.

? Thank you, Pepper, ? said Jane before looking up, as if on cue, Dragon gasped. ? Something has happened! ?

He dived down under the battlement to land on a smaller tower near the humans. The bold move made Jester felt on the ground, out of surprise.

? I saw them! The dragons! Flycallalam! Flycallalam! Flycallalam dragon! ? he chanted with a little choreography.

Jane imitated him. Her friends watched in disbelieve until Jester joined in. They all chanted and danced in harmony … until Jane, Smithy and Pepper all stopped. They watched Dragon and Jester ridicule themselves for a while. Jester was the first to realize they had been fooled.

? All Fools Day! ? said Jane, Smithy and Pepper.

? That, my friend, is what a proper All Fools Day hoax is really like! ? said Jane.

Jester laughed along with his friends, but Dragon was having a harder time.

? You! The berries! The dance! You fooled me! And you all helped her! ?

? Not me! Not this time! ? panicked Jester.

? You did say he would laugh with us, not roast us! ? said Smithy.

Dragon grunted … and started laughing.

? You got me! ?

? Bravo, Jane! ? applauded Sir Theodore. ? A fine deception, indeed! ?

Jane bowed as everyone applauded.

? Fool the mind and the battle is yours! ?

Rake choose that moment to exit from the kitchens.

? Help! ?

He took one sight at Dragon on the battlement, turned back and run back inside, which only produce hilarity along his friends.

8

Later that night, Jane was reflecting on her day as she moved the juggling stones on her window side.

? Now that was an All Fools Day! I must get these back to Jester tomorrow. With an apology for whipping the yard with him. ?

She then notices something strange.

? Wait! I know this pattern! ?

She replaced them and formed … a jester's hat!

? No way! ?

She rushed out of her room, only to find the fool waiting outside.

? You knew! You knew all along! ? she said.

? Yes! ? he said, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. ? But I also know a great hoax when I see one! Who am I to fool a perfect fool? It was magnificent, Jane! ?

? Thank you! And thank you for playing along. ?

Jester left his post, nodded at her with an added bell flip and left. Jane looks at the sky as Dragon flip and turn.

? Well, Dragon, it seems today made a fool of us all. ?
