A Proper Greenhouse:

A Source of Food:

As I got busy over the next few weeks, making sure the small greenhouse that I did have survived the long months in space, I also made sure that the new greenhouse was adequate enough to survive the long months in space as well. With the help of Simon and the permission from the Captain, we emptied out one of the unused guest quarters and got busy moving the seed beds into the empty space. The bed had been removed as well as the toilet, but the lights and the mirror were still intact. We would need the lights to keep the plants alive.

With the help of Jayne and Kaylee, we put up shelving to hold all the plant containers that I would need to sustain a garden on the ship. And just in case we had to do a little maneuvering through space, we made sure that none of the plants could fall out of their containers. We put a plastic sheet (sorta like metal only see-through) over the shelves and a bumper along the outside of the shelves so the containers couldn't fall off. It was easy to build the garden especially since it was easy to see myself as the one that would be working in the garden.

Simon helped me set up some irrigation methods with a few IV tubes that he wasn't going to use. Apparently, my bringing medical supplies onto the ship had doubled his supply of IV tubes, so now we would use them as irrigation for the garden. His sister River liked that she now had something else to do on the ship while everyone else was busy. She would poke her head into the space and look around at all the improvements that we were making to the space. She even laughed a few times when I gave her a few leaves that had fallen off some of the plants. Simon seemed to notice my kindness towards his sister as did everyone else.

With all the plants in their containers and me moving in and out of the garden, the crew hardly saw me. River was the only one that was around nearly all the time. She seemed to like the fact that there was someone else on the Serenity with the same name as her. She would smile every time I gave her a plant to show her brother. I was slowly going through everything that I had brought with me and was moving certain things that could be used in the garden out of the container.
