Introduction

This story was the first work of fan fiction I ever posted, starting in 2011. It is still the longest story I've worked on, both in length and in time. In more recent years, I have taken steps to revise early chapters, since my writing has improved so much over the past decade. I still have material I want to post, but am not regularly updating it anymore, since I have other projects that require more attention.

Some reviews for this story have expressed disappointment that it is so similar to the show. Because of this, I want to clarify the nature and intent of this work.

This is, in essence, a rewriting of Avatar: The Last Airbender, written for my own pleasure, and shared for the pleasure of readers with interests similar to mine. The events of Book 1 deviate from the canon more than any other part of the story. Those deviations cause later events to play out differently than in the canon, though the events themselves are much the same. The plotline tends to gravitate back to the canon, because the way I see it, the rest of the events in the Avatar world have continued to go the same way. I hope that the changes I have made are enough to hold your interest and satisfy your imagination.

To those who reach the end and wonder whether I am going to update: yes, I am. I have a great deal of material written for the postwar era. My difficulty is that I am in a very different place in life now than when I started this story, so I tend to think about other stories more than this one in my daily life. I have other fan fiction projects that I'm working on, as well as commitments in my personal and professional life. I hope you will bear with me and that what is already published will be satisfactory in the meantime.

Thank you for your understanding and your patronage. I hope you enjoy this journey.
