"Imagine me and you. We can go anywhere, be anywhere, do anything, in any time, in any world!" Kitty pleaded, tears streaming down her face, as she held her beloved's beautiful but heartbreakingly sad face in her slightly trembling hands.

Rachel shook her head, carrying them further up away from their teammates just to be absolutely certain their conversation was entirely private. "Kitty, we know we can't do that. Besides, you'd leave your friends?"

"Yes."

"Your family?"

"Yes!"

"You'd regret it," Rachel said sadly, laying her hands over Kitty's and crying just as hard as she was.

"Maybe," Kitty admitted, rarely one to shy away from the truth, "but I'll regret it more if I let you go!"

Rachel shook her head, closed her eyes for a moment against the pain in her heart, and then reopened them. "You can't keep me here, Kitty. I can't let you."

"Then take me with you!"

"I can't let you do that, either. I'm sorry, but I know what it's like not to have any family and friends left."

"As long as I've got you, I'll be okay."

"Really?" Rachel countered. "You want to never see Logan again, Ororo, and Lockheed? You want to live in a world where our Fuzzy Elf is dead and the dream's in ruins?"

"I want to live in a world with you in it!" Kitty cried, throwing her arms around her and hugging her tightly.

"Then live in this one," Rachel told her, "where I'll be born and where I'll one day return to you."

"When?!"

"Just as soon as I'm able," she promised, tearing herself away from her and doing what she knew she must.

The End
